Custom Foot Orthotics

There are many routine treatments for foot problems--from anti-inflammatory pills, cortisone injections and surgery to a multitude of different pads, cushions, ointments. All of these have temporary, pain-relieving effects, but, if you want the chance to permanently solve the problem, you must change the way your feet function on the ground. And one way to do that is to use a true, custom designed, biomechanical orthotic. Be aware however, as not all orthotics are created equal.

As with the many different treatment options there are for foot problems, there are just as many different orthotic companies willing to sell you their product, claiming that it will cure your pain. Unfortunately, according to most major studies, what you can buy off the shelf is just as effective as what you can pay hundreds of dollars for in the form of a ‘custom orthotic’. The reason for this is that most orthotic companies fail to use a casting technique that creates a large enough arch under the foot to adequately support it. Instead, they create orthotics with a minimal arch and then use combinations of cushions and pads, and wedges under the heel or forefoot to try to control how the foot moves.

Anaylysis of the basic mechanics show clearly that the most effective way to control the foot is to apply a force directly up under the arch. It is only when the arch of the foot is correctly positioned during the gait cycle that the foot can function as it is supposed to. This requires a very specific way of casting the foot so that the orthotic that is produced will put the foot in the maximally corrected position to create the maximum benefit.

And that is what we do!

With our specific casting technique and the characteristics of the modern plastics used, we can create a custom, supportive platform for each foot that is rigid enough to achieve optimal arch support, while remaining flexible enough to allow enough flattening for shock absorption, terrain adaptation and comfort. No one makes orthotics like Sole Supports Orthotics. It costs more to make them; casts that are not done well enough are rejected, and the lab only takes orders from providers (like ourselves) who have had special training in the casting process. We have to do our work carefully and thoroughly in order for you to be comfortable. But the good news is, once we have bothered to do all that, the result is an orthotic that really works the way it is supposed to. We actually change how a foot functions on the ground. We make people better!
